Make no mistake about it, analingus (otherwise known as rimming) is still very much a taboo. Although it might not be first on your to-do list when it comes to your night-time repertoire, it can be a really fun and safe activity to incorporate into your foreplay. If you’re wondering “what is rimming?” or are curious about how to give a rim job or being rimmed sexually, you’ve come to the right place.
So, what is sexual rimming? How can you get the most out of it? Is analingus safer or less so than other forms of oral sex? We’ve got all your questions covered in our complete analingus guide.

What is rimming?
Let’s start simple, what is rimming? Rimming, or analingus, is the act of stimulating your partner’s anus with your mouth or tongue. The anus has a fair few nerve endings, meaning that when it’s stimulated by something smooth and tactile, such as a partner’s tongue or lips, it can create a fairly intense feeling.
Unlike regular oral sex, a rim job is more about adding extra levels of pleasure to the sexual experience, as opposed to trying to directly achieve an orgasm. You may find that you can make your partner orgasm with regular oral, but analingus is a completely different ballgame.
Instead, try thinking of rimming as another element to your foreplay. It can be used as a pregame to penetrative sex or can simply be enjoyed by itself. In either case, you can use rimming to explore your partner’s body in a different way. Whilst giving your partner some amazing analingus, try running your hand all over their body. You can even use your hand to stimulate their genitals while you pleasure their anus – this should really elevate their experience of being rimmed sexually.
What does rimming feel like?
The anus contains a whole load of nerve endings. The best way to describe the feeling of receiving analingus would be that it is similar to being stimulated in any other erogenous zone. You may find analingus extra pleasurable, however, because of the taboo nature of the act. As everyone is different, analingus can feel great to some people but not so much for others. People also perform anal rimming differently; some penetrate with their tongue whereas others prefer to stick to external stimulation. The best thing to do if you’re curious is to give it a go!
What does rimming taste like?
Fear not, giving your partner some loving analingus isn’t going to taste how you would expect. You would be forgiven for thinking that it may be unpleasant based on what the anus is used for on a day-to-day basis, but that simply isn’t the case. Provided your partner has a good wash of the area before you get started, you are only really going to get the taste of your partner’s skin.
Having said that, if you really want to try anal rimming but you’re worried about the taste you may experience, or your partner wants to try giving you some analingus and you are feeling a little self-conscious, a great workaround is to try some flavoured lube with your rimming.
Why not try our Durex Strawberry flavoured lube? Before you get down to business, simply apply some of our sugar-free, strawberry flavoured lube to your partner’s anus to dispel any worries. Instead of the skin-like taste, you’ll enter the blissful world of strawberry as you pleasure your significant other. Adding some moisture to your rim job can also bring some smoothness to your analingus, giving it a smooth, comfortable and pleasurable feeling for your partner too. Being a sugar-free lubricant means you can indulge in your analingus without feeling too guilty – that’s the kind of dessert we like! The Durex Strawberry flavoured lube also washes off easily so you can focus less on the mess and more on the pleasure.
Our flavoured lubes are also compatible with anal sex. This means that if you are planning an entire night of anal indulgence, and want to include both rimming and anal penetration, it really is that case of one lube fits all!
How safe is rimming?
Can you get an STI from rimming? The answer is yes – unfortunately, moving away from the genital area does not guarantee you any more safety from an STI perspective. You can catch several STIs from analingus, just as you can from regular oral. Additionally, any genital contact carries the risk of transferring bacteria from one place to the other, so it’s best to practice safe sex and good hygiene.
If you have safety concerns, there are many products out there designed to be used for vaginal or anal oral to protect you and your partner. These products typically consist of a barrier or ‘dam’ to prevent direct contact.
How to perform analingus
Giving your partner a rim job doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming – it’s not much different to giving them regular, oral sex. As with other methods of oral sex, it’s a good idea to make sure everything is hygienic downstairs. Taking a shower or bath together first is a nice way of preparing for oral and building some excitement before you begin analingus.
You can start to stimulate your partner’s anus by using your fingers to lightly trace over their buttocks and anus. You can even use your breath to breathe warm air over their bottom first for gentle stimulation before touching them with your fingers.
When they’re ready to be rimmed sexually, lightly trace your tongue over their anus. When they respond positively, you can begin to experiment with different movements of your tongue. Whether it’s a delicate tickle with the tip of your tongue, or a firm lick pressing their anus with the body of your tongue – find out what pushes their buttons and drives them wild. If you and your partner are ready to delve deeper, you can also try poking the tip of your tongue into their anus.
Remember to pay attention to your partner’s body – if you feel them pulling away or tensing up, ask them if they’re okay. Communicating about their boundaries and what they do and don’t like will make analingus more enjoyable for both of you.
Best positions for rimming
There are loads of great positions to try out for some anal rimming, it’s just important to bear in mind that the anus is a lot lower or further back than the penis or vagina anatomically speaking. With this in mind, some of your usual oral sex positions may not work or may need adapting a little.
Doggy
Doggy is the perfect position for analingus. To do this position, have your partner bend over so they’re on their hands and knees. Then you can comfortably position yourself behind them. Not only is this position convenient for anal or vaginal penetration, but it is a comfortable position for you to lower your head to perform analingus. This can be great for sexual rimming or if you’d like to mix in some analingus whilst having penetrative sex.
Missionary
If you’d like to add some analingus whilst in the missionary position, you just need to make some small adjustments. In missionary, you are lying above your partner, in between their legs. From this position, you simply need to ask your partner to lift their legs to their chest with their knees bent. This will expose their anus, allowing you to bend down and begin your mind-blowing anal rimming technique.
Chaired
Chaired is a nice, easy one for you to slip in some anal rimming. First, have your partner sit in the chair with their bum right on the edge. Then, similar to the missionary position above, get your partner to lift their legs to their chest allowing you access to their anus. You may need to kneel on your knees to comfortably perform analingus, but this position is a great one for both of you to enjoy.
Prone
If you or your partner are a bit nervous or new to analingus, prone is a great beginner position. Get your partner to lay flat on their front and have them spread their legs a little. From here, you can bend over and perform anal rimming by sliding your tongue in between their butt cheeks. Since there’s no eye contact involved, you can go crazy without feeling uncomfortable about them watching you – and for them it’s a great, lazy position.
In summary
Analingus doesn’t have to be taboo – if you and your partner are curious about anal rimming, it can be a great tool to add to your sexual toolbox. Whether it’s the main act or a lead-up to anal or other sex, analingus can be a fun way of bringing more intimacy to you both. Just remember to keep it clean (from a hygienic perspective, let that dirty talk run wild) and make sure you’re both comfortable.
